Hi everyone! Welcome to this week’s installment of Tom’s Top 3 Tuesdays, where I highlight three pieces of content (Podcasts/Shows/Songs/Articles/etc.) that I found interesting or noteworthy from the prior week.
If you’re new here, please consider subscribing to my newsletter — the creatively named: Tom’s Newsletter. In addition to posts like these, I write about my interests (the entertainment industry, sports, fitness, productivity, and more!) and books that I am reading.
If you find at least one thing in this post useful, please drop a like and share with a friend using the link below. I really appreciate the support!
Today is election day (*collective gulp*). My employer kindly gives us the day off to vote, but since my vote has been cast for a while now, I instead get to spend today in a constant state of nervous dread. Writing this newsletter is a useful distraction, so hopefully reading it provides you with a similar respite.
Let’s get into it:
[YouTube] FOX Sports - MINI-MOVIE of 2024 World Series
You know I had to do it to em.
My Dodgers won the World Series. It wasn’t quite the back-and-forth clash of the titans everyone hoped for, but I couldn’t be happier.
Thanks to my good pal Pat, who works for the Dodgers, I was able to go to games 1 and 2 in LA. As you’ll see/revisit in the mini-movie, game 1 was a game for the ages, as Freddie Freeman hit the first walk-off grand slam in World Series history.
I apologize for the recent deluge of Dodgers content, but I promise this will be it for a while (until next season, probably).
[Podcast] No Film School Podcast - Why Indie Film Distribution Is About To Go Punk Rock
This podcast is a cool roundtable conversation between some professionals who have had to navigate the world of “hybrid distribution” by themselves.
They offer up some advice for filmmakers looking to produce and distribute their films. I’ll summarize the highlights below:
The most important thing that they reiterate throughout the podcast is the importance of having a goal for distribution as early as possible, ideally at the film’s conception
You should have a grasp on which outcome is most important to you
Money
Work with an identifiable audience that has been overlooked by other media (easier said than done)
Career
Changing the World
Audience
Get to know as much as you can about distribution through self-education
Safeguards yourself from coming off as someone that can be taken advantage of
Don’t rush to TVOD — embrace theatrical and in-person audiences
Do as many screenings as you can to get feedback before applying to festivals
[Treasure Trove of Knowledge] Roger Ebert Great Movie Essays
This repository contains hundreds of movie reviews from the famous film critic Roger Ebert. It is a curated list of what he considers to be some of the best movies of all time, replete with films from 1924 through 2009.
I just stumbled upon this recently and am looking forward to digging deeper. I plan to use it for inspiration on movies to watch. Additionally, I want to read about films I have already seen to see where Ebert picked up on something that I missed.
That wraps up this edition of Tom’s Top 3 Tuesdays. If you made it to this point, please drop a 1️⃣, 2️⃣, or 3️⃣ in the comments to let me know what you found most interesting/useful. And as always, please consider sharing with a friend who you think would enjoy! I’ll be back next week. ✌️
